Containerized Cars

Container shipping for transporting your vehicle provides the safest means of transportation to your overseas destination. Your vehicle is loaded into the shipping container at one of our warehouses located throughout the U.S. Once your vehicle has been loaded into the shipping container, wooden braces are placed around each of the tires and nailed to the floor of the container. 

  

Nylon straps are then used to tie your vehicle down and they are secured to the walls of the shipping container. Before the container is returned to the port of loading for export, a numbered seal is inserted through the doors. This seal number will be shown on all export documents relating to the shipment of your vehicle overseas. 

When using a container shipping service for transporting your vehicle, please note of the following: 

  

• A 20' container will hold one vehicle.  
• A 40' container will hold two standard size vehicles.  
• A 40' High Cube container can often hold three small vehicles; we can build a ramp inside the container for the third vehicle. Although at times we can load forth car it is depending on sizes 
• After your vehicle(s) have been loaded into the shipping container, there may be additional space in the container for a limited amount of personal effects and household goods. Although the shipping costs will not increase for shipping your personal belongings in the container, there will be an additional cost to have your personal belongings loaded and secured in the container.  
• Your vehicle must arrive at our warehouse with no more than 1-2 gallons of gasoline in the fuel tank.  
• The battery will be disconnected once the vehicle has been loaded into the shipping container. 
• Personal items are permitted to be shipped inside your vehicle. However, they must be secured and we must receive a detailed packing list.  
• Hazardous items are not permitted to be shipped in your vehicle or the container.  
• When the container arrives to the overseas port, you will need to make arrangements to have the container transported from the port to a warehouse for unloading. If requested, we can often handle these arrangements on your behalf. 
• Marine insurance, though not a requirement is strongly recommended when shipping your vehicle overseas. Your domestic auto insurance will not cover a loss or damage to your vehicle while it is in transit to an overseas location. The liability of all steamship lines is limited to $500.00 per vehicle or shipping container.

Dockworkers and their employers reached a tentative agreement on royalty payments, averting a strike that would have shut down eastern U.S. ports for the first time in 35 years.

Longshoremen Strike 12/29/2012

Longshoremen strike may shut down US East Coast ports....

Nearly 15,000 dockworkers at 14 ports on the US eastern seaboard, organized by the International Longshoremen’s Union (ILU), may go on strike in the event that the union and port owners cannot agree on a new contract by Saturday at midnight.

The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, a non-binding governmental arbitration agency, has requested that both the ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), which represents the port owners, shippers and other interests, meet one more time before the current contract expires.

A strike would cripple container shipping from Boston, Massachusetts to Houston, Texas. It would be the first ILA strike since 1977. The ILA would continue to handle non-containerized cargo and military cargo.

Current contract negotiations between the ILA and USMX started in March 2012, six months before the contract expiration date. In September, USMX and the ILA extended negotiations on a new contract through December 29, a gift from the union to the employers that guaranteed smooth operation of the ports during the busy holiday season.

US port strike still looming along eastern and southern coasts

US port strike expected to start 12/29/2012...

American businesses, including manufacturers and farmers are preparing for a potentially crippling strike by dockworkers along the US Eastern Seaboard and southern Gulf Coast.

The walkout may start next Sunday, when a 90-day extension of a contract between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and a number of shipping lines, port associations and terminal operators expires, threatening to bring port operations along US eastern and southern coasts to a standstill, The Los Angeles Times reports Tuesday. 

Talks between the ILA and the US Maritime Alliance Ltd., “a group of ocean cargo shipping lines, cargo terminal operators and port associations at 14 US harbors,” broke down last week over the terms of a new six-year contract, the report adds, raising fears that the union may call for its first strike in 35 years.

The main point of disagreement between the two sides, according to the report, involves what is known as the “container royalty fees on cargo,” which complements the wages of dockworker receive. 

Employers at shipping agencies and terminal operators intend to restrict such fees and limit who gets them. The union insists, however, that the royalty fees should not be altered. 

The only factor that would alleviate the impact of the strike is that the current season is the slowest for incoming cargo via the sea.

However, in a letter to US President Barack Obama last week, a retail federation and coalition of national and state organizations insisted that a "failure to reach a contract agreement would result in a coast-wide shutdown at 14 containerized ports - from Maine to Texas - which would have serious economy-wide impacts," the report adds. 

The letter urged Obama to adopt every possible measure to bring both sides back to the negotiating table and maintain the movement of cargo. 

Meanwhile, in a strike late last month, most of the Los Angeles Port and half of the Long Beach Port in California were shut down during an eight-day strike by the clerical unit of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union.

In anticipation of network congestion resulting from a potential work stoppage on the US East Coast, APL has filed a congestion surcharge, effective December 30, 2012.  This surcharge will apply to all shipments into/out of the United States and Canada with a cargo receipt date of December 30, 2012, or later, only in case of a work stoppage.

Dear Sea and Air Experts Clients & Colleagues,

As you may have already heard, there is a labor dispute currently taking place between the ILA (International Longshoremen's Association) and the ports all across the United States of America. There is a chance that such a dispute will lead to a strike which is currently scheduled to commence on December 29th, 2012 and run indefinitely until the dispute is resolved. Although unlikely, such a strike is a possibility and if it does occur it will affect every port across the U.S.

Negotiations on a new contract between the ILA (International Longshoremen's Association) and employers represented by the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX) broke off abruptly Tuesday afternoon. The union and management said they were going to discuss container royalties, payments that are made to longshoremen based on the weight of containerized cargo. USMX has wanted to cap those payments.

For those clients who happen to have cargo in the ports or containers loaded but not yet ingated, they will be charged demurrage and/or per diem charges. Such charges vary by steamship line and will vary from $800 per container to $2000 per container, and could be higher if the strike is prolonged for an extended period of time.

Let me reiterate that the chances of this happening are low, however, since we choose to be on the cautious side Sea and Air Experts is insisting that you provide your WRITTEN INSTRUCTION IF YOU WANT YOUR CONTAINER LOADED AND TO TAKE THE RISK, if we do not received such instructions we will not load your container/cargo.

This is for loads starting from Monday December 21, 2012.
